Road to Bali

As most of you know, we are planning to go to Bali for our honeymoon at the end of March. Has anyone been there who can recommend a good hotel in either Kuta, Sanur or Ubud? Recommendations of spas, beaches, temples etc. also welcome!

PS: The picture is a Balinese fruit market I found with GIS

I went to Bali about 7 years ago and had a great time. I am racking my brain to try to remember the name of the place we stayed in Ubud. When I get it I'll post it. Not sure if you're looking to live it up for your honeymoon or have low-frills fun. The place we stayed was great and the equivalent of about 10 bucks a night. There was a rooster that woke us a bit after dawn, but the Bali coffee more than made up for it.

I steered clear of Kuta, since that is the party area and I was looking for a little peace and quiet. I traveled out to Amed, which had beautiful black sand beaches, and got a walk-in rate for a few nights at really gorgeous beach-side bungalows for about $40 a night, and paid a guy with a longboat to take us out to some old shipwreck for snorkeling. You can get good walk-in rates at a lot of places, if you don't mind that free-falling feeling of not having a reservation. You can always find a room, don't worry.

Wow! Thanks for the advice! The black sand beaches and snorkeling on a shipwreck sounds awesome, definitely right up our alley.

We're looking to relax and chill out on the beach, go swimming or snorkeling and just soak up the tropical beauty, maybe go for a massage or two. As long as there's flush toilets and hot water that's good enough.

Let me know if you remember the name of the place you stayed.

PS How is your house-hunting going?

Got it! Nuriani Guest House. It was just off a main street, and very close to the Ubud attractions (Monkey Forest was just a few minutes by foot). I googled it and found a bunch of places booking for them, all around the $10 I quoted. I can't remember where I found them or how I booked, but they came and picked us up at the airport and were very good to us. It's a small, family-run place. Not sure if it changed at all since I went, but I doubt it.

We're having a house built in Yurinokidai. Kind of near that bakery that always has long queues out the door. There's a bunch of houses being built on the other side of the road, up the hill a bit. We're just waiting for my eijyuken to be approved (which could be forever) to finalize a loan. Nice mountain views! Looking forward to it, neighbor!

Have a lovely honeymoon!

Thanks again! I'll look into that guest house.

Hope everything goes well with your visa, I'm applying for a spousal visa for the first time this year, and the red tape on the application is incredible!

We had an easy time with the spousal visa. We were in the U.S. and facing whether to stay and get my wife a Green Card or get me a spousal visa and return to Japan. After learning just how obnoxious the Green Card process was (and the immigration people were), it made the paperwork for the Japanese spousal visa much more inviting. Aside from the paperwork, which we accomplished in a few nights, it was a cakewalk. I had it in about 3 weeks.

The paperwork for the permanent residency was just a few pages and some tax forms from the accountant, but the indeterminable wait is nuts. Especially with other stuff depending on it. Anyway, good luck!

Me and and Miki stayed at a hotel called the Bali Rani in Kuta, very nice, I recommend it. I think there might be some pictures of it on my facebook page.
