Another Pick-up from Yahoo Japan

Yesterday was April 1st, the day when most companies in Japan hold entrance ceremonies to welcome new employees. As you can see here, the entrance ceremony at the Toba Aquarium was a little different than most. (Yes, they really are wearing suits underwater, pretty cool, eh?)

(I'll update on our trip to Bali as soon as we get the pictures on CD, and I recover from whatever I've come down with. At first I was afraid I had got Dengue Fever or Cholera or Bacillary Dysentary, but according to the doctor it's just some garden-variety stomach bug, thank goodness.)

Good Morninger!

So you are home...hope the bug you brought back didn't spoil your time in Bali. That's quite a list of suspected illnesses! Whatever you're suffering from it isn't failure of imagination.

Yup, we're home. I didn't get sick until we got back though, so Bali was just perfect.

I'll try to get the pics up soon. Go on Skype so we can chat!

Julie- I've already sent some by mail and I'll be putting some up on the web once we get a CD made. Sorry for the wait. The actual pics ( 7 of the best) shoud be arriving at your house in about 5 or 6 days.

Also, thanks for 'Borkmann's Point'. I liked the characters and the setting, but the ending was a bit sudden, and I felt it didn't hang together enough. Let me know what you thought of it.

Also, have you read any of Jasper Fforde's 'Thursday Next' or 'Nursery Crime' books? If you haven't, you should. They're great. I know my Mom has a few, so maybe she'd let you borrow one.

I agree about the ending. The other thing that bothered me was that the setting was a generic northern european city. I know geography isn't always exact but I like it when I can at least locate the setting on a map. I like some specificity in the setting. I think the author's next one is set in a recognizable Sweden not generic Sweden/Denmark/Norway-like country.
I have read the Thursday Next - haven't read Nursery Crimes. I'll check it out. I read All She Was Worth by Miyuki Miyabe on vaca - liked it. Just got Jhumpa Lahiri's new short story collection Unaccustomed Earth. Have you read The Namesake and Interpreter of Maladies? I really liked both.
Can't wait to see the pix. It sounds like you had a great trip

Julie-
Have read both 'The Namesake' and 'Interpreter of Maladies'. I picked up IOM at a bookshop in Japan a long time ago because it was one of the few English books they had and was pleasently surprised. Then when I saw she had another book out I picked it up right away. I'll definitely get the new one as well.

If I recall correctly 'The Namesake' was recently made into a movie too. Have you seen it?

Yeah, I like Miyabe Miyuki as well. She's trashy as hell but she spins a good yarn. I have 'All She was Worth' as well as 'RPG' and 'Crossfire'.

Actually something that I'd always meant to read and never had was 'The Remains of the Day', but I did finally read it recently and it was great. You should read it if you haven't. I've picked up his most recent one as well and added it to my evergrowing pile.

The book I'm actually in the middle of right now is 'Faith in Fakes' by Umberto Eco.

Whew...
