What's in a Name?
So, now that we know a baby's on the way it's time to start thinking about names. We're already set for boy's names. If Baby Kanou is a boy he'll be known as 加納正宗. (That's Masamune Kanou to all you non-kanjified people out there). But if it's a girl, the name is still up for grabs. Right know Leina (礼菜) and Junna (純奈) are at the top of the list, but we'd love to hear suggestions from anybody out there!

Interestingly, we had plenty of girl's names, but could not come up with enough boys names we were happy with (and of course we had a boy). It was important to us to have a name that worked in both languages, but was also unique (yeah, not "Ken." No offense to the many parents of "Kens" out there) and that we both liked. I didn't want to deal with all the mispronunciations in either language, especially not from family members. So, "Hide" was out, for example. And my mother's name, "Ruth," wouldn't sound that great here.
I'd share some of our girl's name picks, but I'm still hoping for a girl for our second child. Leina was in there, I think, but not at the top. Our boy is Eamon (衛門) which I think is pretty nifty in both english and japanese. We thought of it at almost the last minute.
I voted on the phone yesterday but, as they say, 'vote early and often' so I am casting another vote for Leina.

Yeah, I'm basically sold on Leina at this point, but if any really excellent suggestions were made I would certainly consider them.
The only trouble I foresee is that a friend told me it's a pain to get the Japanese passport authorities to accept a Japanese name spelled with an L, but Leina is much cuter than Reina.

My two cents says Reina is pretty cute too and has that "Queen of the Jungle" feel going for it. Since they're both going to be pronounced the same anyhow, why make the passport folks crazy? Let her spell it Leina when she writes romaji and who will care?
If you get your American passport first, the Japanese passport will get that spelling. That is how we were able to get "Eamon" instead of "Emon" as our boy's romanization. That is, if you plan to get your baby an American passport.
I also like Reina, for my two cents. When it was on our name list I was imagining it with an "R."
